A flyer was placed on bulletin boards in the Civic Festhall.

"Licca Lyricia will be giving a lecture on the properties of Enigma wine at the lecture hall at the fourth day of the month, in the evening."

/// If a mod would like to put a more firm date, please do so... I seem to have trouble coming up with a proper date for RP purposes.

// The following is a transcription of the lecture, written by an Sensate inker that was at the lecture, slightly edited based on Licca's writing some numbers incorrectly on her lecture notes. It was posted along with the accompanying handout that Licca prepared on the Festhall bulletin boards for the Sensates who had to miss the lecture.

In any case, let us begin.

This lecture is about the history, characteristics, and the properties of Enigma wine. As some of you in this room know, Enigma wine is called that because in general, no one can really read the label on it, although the labels in question have certain characteristics that are common to each bottle.

The last time Enigma wine was made was approximately 500 years ago, in my home village. This will lead us into the history of the wine.

Enigma wine actually has a name in my native language, but unfortunately, the sounds in my native language does not directly map to Common, so for purposes of this lecture, we'll continue to refer to it as Enigma wine.

The wine is made by monks of the Temple of Bacchus in my home village, as a means to raise funds for their living expenses and philanthropic activities. The secret to making this particular wine is the type of grape that is used. The grapes that are used for this particular wine only grows on volcanic ash soil, and even there, there is immense difficulty in growing it. Therefore, even while the wine is in production, not very many bottles were made, which contributed to the high cost of the wine. Usually, there were only enough grapes from each crop to make about 100 bottles a wine per year. The wine itself was known throughout the multiverse, as bottles of it have been found in both celestial and fiendish planes.

(The inker notes that Licca takes out a bottle of Enigma wine from her case of wine and shows it to the audience.)

The bottles are magically enchanted to allow Enigma wine to preserve its taste and quality, and to also provide a means to determine whether the bottle was opened or tampered with. If you take a look at the handout on the section labeled, "Detecting Tampered Bottles", there is written the arcane words for a variant on the light spell that will allow you to detect a tampered bottle. A bottle that was not tampered with will glow green under this spell. This green glow will not show if the bottle is opened or tampered. Let me demonstrate.

(The inker notes that Licca casts the spell on the bottle she had taken out, causing it to have a greenish glow. Licca then takes out another bottle, but it had an X drawn on the label.)

This bottle I've opened yesterday, so it has been opened/tampered with.

(The inker notes that Licca casts the spell on the bottle with the X, but the bottle remains dark.)

Before I continue, does anyone have any questions?

(A woman in the audience named Levria spoke up.)

Levria: Does it taste as good as your cake?
Licca: Well, cake and wine taste different, so I can't really compare between the two.
Levria: Oh... Verdant says some people like your wine as much as your cake. But... barring that... do you have any cake here?
Licca: I do. I baked it a couple of days ago for this lecture, to accompany the wine.
Levria: Oh! Where is it?

(Cake was brought in and was enjoyed by most of the folk. The leftover cake mysteriously got eaten by someone invisible. A man named Verdant then spoke up.)

Verdant: Er, you mentioned that the Temple was responsible for making the wine. Was magic involved in the making of the wine as well as the bottling?
Licca: To answer the last question... the wine was made using, for the most part, a variant on traditional wine-making techniques. The only magic that was used was to seal the bottle and to put the tamperproof seal on it. Due to the nature of the grape and the quantity of grapes available, some parts of the process has to be modified.

(Licca returns to the lecture.)

Let's continue. If you all will refer to your handouts, there is a section on "Glyphs on Enigma Wine Bottles".

(Licca turns to the board and draws the glyphs that were on the handout.)

On a typical Enigma bottle, you will see two rows of glyphs. The first row will be either of the two sets I have written on this board and on your handout. The first set of glyphs indicates that the type of wine is a red wine. The second set of glyphs indicates that the type of wine is a white sparkling wine. The second variant is extremely rare. Out of the 100 bottles made each year, only 10 bottles are of the second variant. The reason is that the second variant is made from selected grapes from the small crop of grapes that are harvested for this wine each year.

(Levria and an ogre named Ran-Bao speak up.)

Ran-Bao: Speaker... how many types of wine are there? Red and white as well as sparkling white?
Levria: What difference does the color make?
Licca: There's only two types... red, and sparkling white. I have not seen them make a white wine that was not a sparkling wine. The color makes a difference on the texture and the flavor of the wine.
Levria: Is there more cake?
Licca: Uhh... no... I think everyone ate the rest of the cake.

In any case, let's get back to the glyphs. The second set of glyphs on a bottle indicate the vintage of the wine.

(Licca draws a set of 10 glyphs that look the same as the ones in the handout, with Common 0-9 underneath each one.)
(Levria speaks out again)

Levria: Maybe we should sample the wines you're talking about?
Licca: That's coming soon.

We use the same numbering system as in Common, so by knowing these glyphs, you can determine the vintage of the wine. For your reference, the last year in our world that the wine was made was 7289. Take that number and add 500. Then, take the number that is written on the bottle, and add 500. Subtract the two numbers and that will get you how old the wine is. Of course, you can omit adding 500 from the second number and get the true age of the wine.

(Licca shows the unopened bottle) So, for example, this one has the glyphs for '7149'. Therefore, to me, the wine would be 140 years old, while for you all, the wine would be 640 years old.

(Licca then shows the bottle with the X) This one has the glyphs for '7285'. This one would only be 4 years old for me, but 504 years old for you all. Both of these bottles are of the red variant.

(Ran-bao speaks up)

Ran-bao: How long will a bottle remain drinkable before it will spoil?
Licca: If it is not opened, virtually forever. If it is opened, approximately a week.

(Verdant speaks up)

Verdant: Is there an...well, "ideal" vintage?
Licca: I don't know if there is an ideal vintage, but my personal favorite is the 7200 vintage.
Verdant: Ah, my apologies. I meant is there an ideal "age" for the wine? As in it should be at least so many years old, since it sounds like the bottles preserve it otherwise...
Licca: All the bottles you find here will be at least 500 years old. However, in my perspective, I like it when the wine has been aged at least 10 years.

(Licca takes out a third bottle)

This third bottle I've taken out has the glyphs for '7199'. The notable thing is that it has the glyphs indicating that it is a white sparkling wine.

Before I continue, are there any questions?

(Levria speaks up)
Levria: Is it time to drink the wine yet?
Licca: I think so.
Levria: Yay!

(The inker notes that Licca with the assistance of several Sensates, begin pouring small samples of wine into wine glasses for everyone who wants a sample. Notably, no wine from the bottled marked with an X was used. The wine tasting concluded the lecture.)

The Sensates talk about the lecture for days and Licca is approached several times by Sensates asking for a sample of this very special wine.

There are also rumours that Licca was immediately promoted to Factotum afterwards- some blame her words, some the wine but all agree it was well deserved.
