Inside The Barracks

Measure Two Larris enters the mess hall of the barracks. He stands over six foot in the red of his Harmonium plate the device on his shield is that of a black gauntlet carrying a bunch of arrows, the symbol of the scourge; Hexetor. His blond hair is clipped short and down the side of his face is a long scar narrowly missing once icy blue eye. He wears the confident sneer of a capable warrior and the expression of someone who would go to any length to win a fight. His faith has never made him popular amongst the Harmonium. Many of the officers follow what Larris considers one of the weaker powers of the law. He has always got results and arrests though always been respected. It is no surprise then that people give him a wide birth as he makes his way through the crowds towards the table the half orc sits at. He sits down opposite undaunted by the larger man's size and apparent strength he states simply and crisply:

"You didn't show. Namer."

Hograth turns another page in his book, not imtimidated by the man nor the rank he holds. He does not look up, his voice deep as he answers calmly.

"I did not show.... and probably this saved many lives, yours included."

He closes the book with a clap and gets up, looking down at the human, a friendly smile on his orcish lips yet his eyes are cold and hard. The half orc does not wear his uniform yet, only his travelling leathers, some parts reinforced with maille. His armour is spread on the table where he inspected it, the large hammer he uses as a weapon when on patrol is leaning against his chair's backrest.

"Sadly I was busy elsewhere....chatting to girls in the sauna and writing reports to our superiors. You know, Measure.... peace must be enforced, harmony achieved."

The rank is spoken without even a hint of respect and the orc starts donning his armour slowly and carefully- almost like following some ritual step by step. As he slips into the gambeson the red scales on his shoulders are shimmering in the candlelight, betraying his draconic blood and he polishes the flaming skull his armour shows on the breastplate once again.

He thinks of the letter he wrote yesterday after returning from his trip to the Hall of Records, a report of a case of corruption and blackmail, written by a cleric of St. Cuthbert- a member of the Harmonium as well- as Hograth was confessing in a Zone of Thruth what he saw in the laboratory.
This letter was delivered to one of the Movers afterwards and Hograth is ready to answer any questions that might come up.

Finishing the tedious task of donning fullplate without help he shoulders his weapon.

"Guard Duty.", he explains.

(( Wanted to write up the letter first but you are too fast for me :-P If you want me to add it just say))

//Go for it. Larris won't know about it until Hogarth mentions it so it won't change his actions here.

This is what he wrote:
wrote:
Sir,

it troubles me deeply to report a case of corruption among our own faction.

Yesterday when I went to seek Measure Larris' help in a personal matter I witnessed him extorting money from the gnome running the shop in the Laboratory found in the Lower Ward.
Later I was also offered my cut, wich I, of course, denied to take.
After revealing to him that I am seeking his aid to end some troubles between me and the Church of Heironeus I also had the suspicion that he planned to ambush me in the slags but the plot was revealed to my by an informant.

I trust you to take action as you see fit and I also request unpayed leave from my duties as a notary until my personal troubles are resolved. As I am a target for those who follow Hextor I fear my mere presence might endanger other members of our faction.

Signed,

Hograth, Namer.

Written in a Zone of Truth by Clavus Exatus, Measure III, Cleric of St. Cuthbert.

Larris simply smiles. Hogarth might briefly see a flash of anger n his pale blue eyes but its gone quickly. He watches the half orc don his full plate.

"Guard duty. Yes. I had a look at the duty roster today it seems you are part of my patrol for the hive tonight. Unless I hear differently from our superiors before then I look forward to seeing you namer."

Malice creeps into the man's voice but his smile remains as he steps back and heads towards the court yard.

He chuckles lowly and puts his helmet on his head, fixing the strap under his chin. There is no need for an answer, no need for a threat or verbal riposte and he walks to the door leading to the Lady's ward to start his shift, guarding the entrance.

He enjoys this duty- it is easy, safe and he can let his mind roam, thinking about what he learned earlier today about his faith, his duties as a Ruby Knight and member of the Harmonium this almost meditative state of mind calming him and renewing his focus.

Hogarth's shift passes relatively quietly. He is passed by the usual procession of drunks jinkskirts and petty thieves being frog marched into the barracks. By contrast he is also passed by a steady stream of planeswalkers making their way two and from the abyss. About half way through his shift, its hard to tell relaxed as he is, just after Hogarth has helped two guardsmen man handle a drunken ogre into a cell he feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns to find himself faced by a woman in Harmonium full plate. Her face not covered by helm is tanned her eyes are light hazel her red hair is tied back out of her way.

"Measure Four O'Hara would like to speak with you."

He lifts his hammer, turns to the woman. " You will stay here, yes? I am not allowed to leave my post until my shift is over. Thank you. I will go immediately"

He seeks out Measure O'Hara as soon as possible.

"I have orders to escort you. Someone is on the way to relieve you and there is another guard on duty outside."

She leads Hogarth through the barracks past the portal to the abyss and through the set of doors at the opposite end of the courtyard. Once inside again they go up a set of stone stairs to the first floor. The woman stops at an office door and knocks there is a call from the other side and he is shown in. He enters an office in a state of mild disorganization. Behind the desk in the center of the room sits a man in Harmonium uniform. He appears to be in the latter stages of middle age his large frame would suggest once he was well muscled, now he sports a growing gut. Although the scars down his face and the non-focusing glass eye he sports instead of a real one speak of him having survived more than one potentially fatal fight it is clear his fighting days are now behind him.

"Namer Hogarth I received your letter this morning. As you have made a disclosure like this it is my duty to inform you that an internal investigation is to be carried out. In the mean time both you and Measure Larris are both suspended from duty his hearing is in two days time you will be informed of the decision. Attkins show him out."

He speaks without taking a breath his glass eye makes it difficult to tell if he has even looked directly at Hogarth as he spoke to him. Already the officer who showed Hogarth up presumably called Attkins has opened the door.

He follows the woman and salutes when he enters the office.

Somehow he respects this grizzled warrior and Hograth listens carefully.

But he is worried- two days? A lot can happen in two days and the gnome is unprotected, easily intimidated or even.... removed.
What Larries might try to do to Hograth he does worry less about- now on leave he can call upon his Magus help and also ask the church... even if he does not want to do the latter yet.

After saluting again when the man has finished he leaves the barracks immediately.
He leaves a note at the Courts for his Magus informing her about what happened and asking for her assistance in his research- then writes a letter to Mazzey, to tell the gnome about what is going on, telling this case of extortion is now investigated.

Afterwards he heads to the Halls of Records again, searching for informations and hints that might lead to more of his lost dragonblooded brothers and sisters.
