on a certain backwater prime, in a certain mossy glade, a casual traveler would find nothing amiss or unusual, thus proceeding onto his path soon after.
but a more attentive passer by would have the impression that certain things
like boulders, bushes, moss layers, or old fallen trees, or even the shadows
cast by the them, appears to rest in a somewhat regular allocation, like if
forming a circle. yet, in the middle of this hypothetical circle, nothing
jumps to the sight. just a few stones and branches, close to each other.
so, if said passer by , struck by curiosity, searches and peeks onto those
objects placed in that peculiar and few noticeable position, he would find entrances to a few recent and supplied underground rooms,
only to get himselves attacked by
some aggressive and well trained halflings right after,
those hiding and keeping watch upon something unknown.
in another but similar scenario, the random traveler might get close to the
elements in the middle of the hypothetical circle, and if, by gods' will or
coincindence, he's carrying a certain object, he would be startled and
surprised to see a glowing interdimensional hole suddenly opening among said
objects.
if fate dictate so, the traveler might walk, fall, or flee into the portal,
simply to find himself or herself in the city of doors.
if not, in both scenarios the traveler would very likely end dead by the hands of those watchful halflings.
same would happen to anyone who comes from the portal and isn't accompained by the right company, or doesn't have the proper permit.
of course the halflings wouldn't tell who they are to a trespasser...
