A journal entry, non-chronological order

Out of all the cursed beasts in the world, a dark-blood called me "odd". Her name was Rode, if I recall correctly. She tries my patience, whether it be her statements, actions, or veiled threats.... urgh.

She didn't seem to grasp why seeing those -beasts- writhe in pain was right. Called it a very 'Drow' like thing. Devils and demons are being of evil, they cause pain, they are PAIN- watching pain die should feel good. Seeing pain in pain is good! It's right... and knowing its right makes me....

I only feel better when I'm with Tomas, he has demon blood in his veins; is it connected?

Excerpts from a long locked and ancient journal

"Today was my birthday, everyone is happy about it. All the other students with me took a day off classes and we all had some cake together. I got to sing a song, and I ain't allowed to sing no more since I got here. Master gave me a little book and he said it was magic. All I had to do was write about my day and I'd be feeling better the next. No matter how far I flipped through I couldn't find a last page and I felt real good. Master didn't give presents to the other kids. I want to make him happy, so I'll write every night or act like it.
It's really hard to write Elvish here, ain't nothing like back home."

"The Fey'Ri were real nice to me when I first came here. They said they wanted to make me feel at home, so they all smiled together and treated me real nice like a sister. Things started changing though, the tests got harder and the others began changing... their bodies, their movements, they were nice once and then they weren't. They hurt me a lot.
Why aren't you changing, they'd ask. I don't want to change, I'd answer. It made me feel odd, sad, but I wanted to go home. I missed mama, and dad, and sister, and brother. But they sent me away- I had to make them proud..."

"We started training with an instructor today, he paired us up. I met this Fey'Ri named Lalette, she was still acting nice to me- the only one. I knew we could still be friends and I told her at night how great a family was, we could escape and it'd just be the two of us- traveling the world and never having to fight again. She liked that. We promised eachother we'd be friends no matter what Master did."

"Today me and Lalette fought, we didn't want to. Master said we had to, I don't like him to be sad- so I said yes. We punched eachother a few times, I went easy but Lalette kept hitting harder and harder. She smiled funny, I knew something was wrong- so I fought back and beat her. I cried."

"Lalette snuck over to see me tonight, both of us still hurt something awful. She said she was sorry for hurting me, I told Lalette it was okay- we were friends afterall. Lalette said we should put on a show. I liked the idea of being in a play again. I said I was real good at plays, singing and dancing. But I wasn't allowed to sing and dance no more, it was useless Master said and he looked sad. I didn't want to make him sad."

"We started fighting with wooden sticks today, Master said we needed to learn weapons to fight the devils. I didn't want to learn weapons, but Lalette said it'd be okay. I knew we had to put on a good play or else we'd both get punished. Lalette wasn't good so I won, she looked angry and screamed at me. Master was happy. I was sad that I made my only friend angry."

"Lalette came over tonight, she said she wasn't really angry. I wanted to believe her, but something wasn't right. But she was my only friend and I liked her a lot so I had to trust her. That's what friends do right?"

"Today we started fighting with metal swords but they didnt have no edges. Master said we needed to learn it to fight the devils. I didn't want to, it'd hurt Lalette I said. Lalette got angry and hit me with it. I heard a crack in my arm and then the pain came, Master looked angry. I swung back at Lalette and cracked her something awful, we kept fighting. I won. Lalette smiled that smile again."

"I couldn't move at all last night, the pain hurt so bad. my skin was all bruised and purple and my arm hurt. Lalette came over, she said sorry, her arm didn't hurt her no more. I asked why. She said, cuz I'm better. But I said I won. She said it wouldn't matter."

"The swords are different this time today. Master said I was learning so fast he made the swords better. They weren't sharp, but when Lalette cracked me this time I saw my skin break open before the pain came.
I knew I couldn't put on a play no more, it hurt too much so I cracked Lalette real good. Her entire arm bent funny and blood came out so she started crying. I dropped my sword and tried helping but then Master got real mad and cracked me with his own. Both my arms were cracked too bad, so I just runs away. Lalette was angry, I don't want to keep making her angry."

"Tonight Lalette snuck over, she gave me a hug and it hurt. She said she was sorry. I didn't believe her. She said she wanted to put on the best play yet and it'd be so good Master would send me back home cuz she was better at this and I was best at singing. All I had to do is get cracked once, just one time. I hadn't got a birthday present since I got this book, and this would be better.
I practiced singing tonight and thought of the dress mama made me for my birthday, I never got to wear it. It was a few birthdays ago but mama is real good knitting, she'd make it fit. I'd see them all again and Lalette would help. I felt bad for ever thinking sour about Lalette.
She's the only one here that cares about me"

"I'm scared about today. I snuck over to Lalette's bed this morning and she was smiling awful proud to the kids who were mean to me. They were all laughing. I asked her what they were laughing about, and she said it ain't nothing. I didn't believe her again, but then remembered last night how wrong I was so I laughed too.
They so laughed hard they stopped noticing I was there, so I pulled Lalette away. I said she ain't need to play this play, cause if I won she'd be stuck her all alone with the meanies. Her eyes teared up and kinda glowed weird red, cause of all the tears. Lalette said it was okay and I don't need to worry, she'd save me then deal with all the meanies alone. I said she could have Mama's lyre if I had to leave real fast, I hid it under my bed every night so master didn't get mad. But Lalette was better than me now, so maybe he wouldn't get mad at her.
She smiled funny again."

"The master said no more playing today since I'd be fighting a demon today. I said I was supposed to be fighting a devil, but he said no, a demon. Then Lalette came out and I knew it was the best play ever. She was gonna act like a demon and get me outta here somethin quick.
Master said no more playing again and gave me a sad look. I thought it was cause he knew I was gonna lose and hafta be sent home again. I'd miss him too, even though he was so mean to me now. But then he gave me a shiny sword like the older kids used to fight the devils, and I knew he was giving me a good birthday present before I was gonna go home.
Lalette came at me faster than I ever seen her move before, I said she must've practiced real hard to be a demon to move that fast. She smiled again but this time her teeth looked real sharp while she tried cracking my head. Something was wrong and I known it, so I moved my head and felt the blade go up top and cut my hair.
At first I thought it was part of the play, just to trick, but then I knew Lalette wasn't playing since I hadn't been playing. I known why Lalette's smile made me feel funny... I always known."
