Chapter One: Origin
- The mortal soul moved to the plane of forever darkness, Demi Plane of Shadow. Drifting through the darkened world, slowly changing its shape, distorting, stretching, ever fainting form until it reached the final shape. A shadow, unaware how long it had existed, through times it travelled with forever hunger driving it onwards, never satisfied. Why was it so hungry? Centuries, Decades, Years, perhaps months, perhaps days, perhaps only minutes passed, the concept of time didn’t seem relevant or comprehensible to this creature, only one thing remained important, eat. But no solid substance could satiate the craving. Then it noticed something within the darkness, a light? Something odd it had not seen before, it needed to get closer, but the closer it got the more it started to envy, desire and hate the light and its source. A distant wheezing scream erupted from the being as it lunged towards the light, there came a sound, a frightened scream, or perhaps joyous scream? It couldn’t discern the difference as it satiated its hunger with the life force of the light which slowly grew dimmer… But alas, the hunger was gone only for so long and the hunt for food continued on in the seeming forever darkness, it continued drifting around with only little to do, but then came a voice, it sounded distant and unreal, yet somehow oddly familiar. The creature tried to look for the source of voice and finally it found it, the thing was dead as well, so it was difficult to discern it from the other darkness. The words it spoke were difficult to comprehend, did it speak in a foreign tongue? The shadow took its time until it finally could understand the words of common, remember the talent to speak and communicate with the being. Though its own voice barely a whisper at the time. The entity asked for its name, reacting by its reflexes the shadow answered in a long wheezing tone its name, one that could have no mortal words to describe it. A cackle erupted all the sudden from the being hearing the odd name, it sounded like a threatening…or perhaps light hearted gesture? The shadow was uncertain and took side of caution. The entity saw the gesture and stated calmly “I will call you Umbra” it said, then started to teach the shadow with the history of the Plane of Shadow, the history of shadows themselves, describing many different undead species… and mortals as a one lot. One thing it could not teach the shadow, the purpose…why was it here? What is it supposed to do? So curious it was, that it got the creature to tell to seek for purpose within a city full of gateways, Sigil. With left notion, one must not feed within the city openly without proper permission or they will perish. The being set its search, it searched for long time until it found the way, it did not know whether it was yesterday or decade that had passed from the conversation until it found the way to Sigil, this wretched city full of the tempting, frightening and aggravating light to feed on, but it may not touch any of it…why was it so tempting? [/li]
