What you may want to do is dig out the items in our XML hak. Between the custom UIs for PC Tools, DMFI, the Kemo animations, and even some of the ones built into NWN2, you can get a good handle on how some of the different xml-based systems work. And just like scripting, it's a lot easier to stand on the shoulders of those who came before; that's how I figured out how to implement our custom loading screen bar.
