...but am I the only one who has a habit of envisioning people on the forums as their avatars? Which leads to some very interesting dissonance. For example, Love_on_a_Wire's avatar looks shy and kind of frightened, and everything they type is heard in a nervous mental voice, while people with angry avatars (like Taihou's frowning soldier) I tend to hear an angry mental voice.
Although I still say the best one of these (from a humorous standpoint) was from Orcy11 on one of the "Hi there I'm new" threads:

Since then, I've really been noticing myself responding to player avatars. So am I just insane (that is, even moreso than usual) or does anyone else suffer from that condition?
p.s.: yes, that DOES mean that in my mind, DM Iggwilv actually IS Iggwilv, and everything Otyugh says is spoken around a mouthful of poop.

I totally have the same habit. I'm honestly really curious how it might, even just slightly, color how we all respond to each other.
That said, the mental voice you picture for me is dead on to the truth. : x

Crap, they told me nobody would know I was really a dog online! Ceremorph, you weren't supposed to figure it out by reverse psychology!
That said, humans are visual creatures, and we do have a psychological tendency to associate people to things. Usually this is faces, or certain common accessories (hats, jewelry, etc.), although online where much of that is missing, Avatars are a very common stand-in. Ever feel bothered when someone just flat doesn't have one? That's probably why.
