Here's something that might be a neat way of playing a character. Just popped into my head.
Many of us play characters that have been thrown to the Sigil wolves, characters who've ended up here for one reason or another, cursed, hunted... whatever. We play our written story and build the character to go along with it.
Why not play a bit of the unknown?
Let's say you talk to an EM or DM when you want to build a new character. You decide the race and the class you want to build (informing the DM/Em willing to help)... but that's it. At a predetermined time, when you and the DM/EM decide, you enter the mod with your new character and only then does the EM/DM tell you the circumstances of your past and the reason you're in Sigil. They might even play a short event to have you arrive in a way that surrounds your newly acquired history and backstory.
Suddenly you have this character who has to live with the events that surround who you are... completely out of your control. After the initial event, you'd be on your own but from time to time, whatever history they gave you, you might find yourself having to deal with aspects of your past (out of your control) that you might not want to deal with... but hey, fate has a way of dealing you random hands now and then.
I dunno... obviously it would be up to any EM/DM willing to play along and hook you up but (and they'd have to keep a short history on the EM forum in case people wanted to 'revisit' parts of your past but after all... it's just a thought.

That sounds like fun to me. Though I'm kind of invested in my current character(s), but I'll definitely keep it in mind.
