Meanwhile, the Poll finally matches with my expectations of how many Sensates there are. Excellent.

It is, definitely. But when you spend an hour or two trying to find how to end the "yes" vs "no" fight, it gets pretty old real quick. It happens, but it tends to not be fun for anyone. It's not a chase or struggle most often, it's two people standing on opposing sides where one says "you're arrested" and the other says "no i'm not". Rinse and repeat until one budges. x)

Argument derailed!

Back on topic....

I've never aligned myself with a faction. I'm thinking for one character inparticular the doomguard would be a nice fit. And perhaps for another... Harmonium I am thinking.

One day, she gave the harmonium a donation of 27 unenchanted weapons. He was not super amused, she was very apologetic, and then pulled out the 28th, and he just walked away.
Hahaha that made me chuckle.

Are you willing to shelf your character if it comes to being taken dead?

I'm not saying that in every situation that should be the case, as we all want to play our characters stories out. Food for thought... I know at some point my villains will be put to rest by PCs hopefully.

By the way the source book I mentioned was factol's manifesto which is the primary source for factions. But I don't think you need to look far to understand the tone they are given in the Planescape setting. They didn't design Planescape to present traditional fantasy tropes in traditional representations. After all they are called hardheads, not dogooders, for a very clear reason. Hardhead is not and never will be a synonym for paladin and that has very little to do with my own pondering about what makes people want to play cops all day. That's just how Planescape is written. The books literally say things like they wish to go to war with other factions to force their own views.

After the faction war the Harmonium relocates. They change their attitudes and focus on diplomacy instead of forceful conversion and oppression. They spend their time mending old wounds and trying to establish better relations. This does not happen yet, they are still the Harmonium called hardheads for very good reasons. They might have paladins in their ranks but that doesn't stop them from beating and arresting paladins that unlawfully slay demons to protect innocents. The Harmonium way is the only way and that's fine for roleplay if you enjoy that.

To answer the question about what they could do to make them more fun to play I think you can roll with what has been given. They should still send expeditions uninvited and unexpected to other worlds and other planes to bring harmony to folks that don't know what's good for them. This is also the tone that Planescape writers give the faction.

As for the Free League being a primary viewpoint on the server I think this is how it should be. It is also Planescape lore that Indeps are the most compatible and helpful for adventurers, especially primes that have just arrived to the planes. You may as well assume that every new character without a faction is an honorary Indep.

Sensates being popular also makes perfect sense.
