Yea, the best builds were the non-power ones by far. People used to sleep on rangers and bane of enemies...

And if you cannot tank, you're not really screwed up either, you just need to use some form of dissappearing. HiPS works if you got the skills, but so does invisibility potions and spells against most of the monstrous NPC's found in the game. It is rather silly, but one of my character has a collection of some 30-50 potions of invisibility. The character is not using them anymore, but they are there for just in case a need to use them rises.
Edit: Shar is a Single-Sphere Power, a nobody in the planar sense of things. This doesn't mean you cannot play a character revering to Shar, but, you may have accept that your character sheet is lying about your actual "deity" of choice.
