Welcome!
I don't know too much about factions and such, as I'm still newish (don't let the join date fool you.)
(More veteran players, feel free to correct what comes next; it's just been my experience...)
Mechanically, though, I have found that the easiest way to learn the server's early zones and intricacies is to play a race with a high strength, natural ac, and regen, as a melee fighter. You probably want to stick with something ECL +3 or less. Your troll frezerker is a great first character...my first character was a beholder, and it was slowwww going for a while. My second character was a troll, and it shot up in level quite quickly (just try to find a source for protection from evil or mind blank, and you'll be ok for the most part.)
After you learn the 1-18 level zones, their keys, and nuances, start a new guy who you're 100% invested in (or don't, if you love your troll =) I still have mine.)

One thing you may not have noticed with the sheer volume of data here on the forums (and on the wiki!) is that we're currently in the process of converting all of our classes. When the custom races were first introduced to choose at character creation a few years back, they ranged from an ECL of 0 all the way up to +10. Considering that we cap levels at Class Levels + ECL, it's going to be a lot more difficult starting out with the high-LA races.
The conversion is to take all base races to +3 LA or fewer, while allowing the granting of some of the greater powers through Racial Prestige Classes unique to specific races (for instance a Troll can take the "Savage Marauder" class for additional Str and Con plus free rage feats, while a Baatezu can take Erinyes (6-level melee) or Brachina (10-level caster) classes to fit those molds.
One other thing to take into account is that unless you're one of those "social butterfly" players who can manage to show up and a day later have dozens of friends, it will be easier to get people to talk to you if you don't show up as one of the more bizarre races. It's a lot trickier for a Treant or Hezrou to make new friends than it is for something that at least looks humanoid.
And of course talking to people is what you'll want, because most will be happy to share with you, IC or OOC, tips to maximize your survival and make leveling less onerous (or even better, they have low-level toons who'll want to join you in clearing out the wererat den or exploring the elemental plane of earth.

Thanks for all the advice! I've rolled an ogre mage for now (lifesaver +2 regen for a newbie/lowbie!) and I'll gish it up and get used to the server's lore, RP and mechanics. Once I'm settled I'll permadeath Hrouzgar and start up something else which interests me.

Don't forget to consider levels in the Ogre Mage prestige class to give you some statistical boosts while still advancing your spellcasting.

And yes, Oni do have the potential to be excellent Eldritch Knights.

Warning: the ogre mage prestige class spellcaster levels will not let you qualify completely for eldritch knight. You'll be able to take the prestige class, but you won't get the "Eldritch Knight:Sorcerer Spellcasting" feat at first level, so you won't get new spells as you advance EK...I found that one out the hard way =\ You'll need to be able to cast 3rd level spells using only your base spell-casting class for EK to work right.

Yes, that's a good point. So if you do take it, you'll still want to make sure you qualify for EK solely on Sorcerer levels (although since it only gives you 4 levels of progression, you'll need those anyways).

That goes for all prestige classes. It's actually possible to encounter the same bug even in the base game, but only on Warpriest class that has higher spell level requirement than anything else, and being a class very few will ever take, most have been able to miss that for almost a decade already.
Only base classes will ever qualify you to the spell level requirement of PrCs. Actually the spell level is probably a misleading term and should instead say X level of wizard/sorcerer etc. instead.
