Should people roleplay the class choices taken?

I do not care what others build I care how they act and RP.

If they build a pure class paladin and are a total asshat ooc and IC....who needs them.

If they build a monk/sd/wm/druid...more power to them.

Some people design a build then figure the rp. My ideas are usually "can I do this?" then I figure rp to support it. Also some have levels of comfort that is the level they feel most comfortable to rp at.

My builds are usually pre-set (though I usually modify them while leveling I think nenir has been revised 7 times shiv about 9. )

We all have personal rules for characters. Mine I do not play clerics or paladins, or have characters who worship deities. It's a comfort thing for me. Just as my characters will always fail in love, if they ever have a romantic relationship it will be with only one player(PrincessTeifling aka my better half) or npc's that I make up and just put in stories.

Those are my personal rules they work for me and I have fun. Others have their own and they have fun. Long as people are creating fun who gives a #$#T

MR.o is right people will power build no matter what rules or limits you put due to now there is a different curve to power.

My view is this: Try to encourage role play instead of wanting rules
or scowling (unless thats what you character would do). The best ways
to do that, in my opinion, are fairly easy.

1.) Stay in character even when others are not
2.) Keep ooc chat to a minimum, use tells instead of polluting the
area with ooc discussion. Some of us aren't in the ooc discussion and
might be off to the side doing some crazy awesome rp with others
3.) Always give people a chance to react. A slow reaction
time does not mean they are a bad role player. Some people type slower
or need to think out the situation and how their character should react.
Also, connection issues.
4.) Don't criticize people's characters even if it seems they are playing
a type (say paladin) wrong. They might have a different angle on LG that
you may eventually really enjoy, if you'd just give it a chance.
5.) If somebody role plays "poorly," remember we all had to start
somewhere.
Give them a chance to develop as a character (and
player) instead of just ignoring them and walking away. You could
make a really cool new friend who may develop into an amazing role
player.

Those are the guidelines I try work with. Although I'm sure I break and
bend them from time to time myself.

Thanks, greypawn.

Those are really 5 excellent points, and I am glad you shared them. I have to admit that I have a lot of room to work on points 3 and 5 myself. It is nice to have these sorts of reminders every now and again.

1. Don't be an ass by staying 'in character' if someone asks something. Just answer.

2. Pollution. A minimum does not translate to none at all. For example, which of the following options would you prefer yourself?
wrote:/// OOC Question.

Or

/t "Character Name 1" /// OOC Question, /t "Character Name 2" /// OOC Question, /t "Character Name 3" /// OOC Question, /t "Character Name 4" /// OOC Question, /t "Character Name 5" /// OOC Question, /t "Character Name 6" /// OOC Question, and /t "Character Name 7" /// OOC Question.
3. If not given the time to finish writing whatever you were writing, edit that which you wrote to the following form:
/t "Character Name X" ///IC, ///OOC.

4. Criticise to characters. (And have that finger on the hotkey set for "haste" just in case.)

5. If someone makes claims of role-playing "richly", just lift your shoulders and trod off if they got nothing but an ego and bad attitude to show for it.

6. Forget the nonsense about power builds, there are only builds. In addition, how do you plan to spot that "powerbuild" in the middle of the bazaar? Through metagaming or using dog whistles?

Mix OOC with IC as needed and just have fun.

like last night I had someone trying to sell some wares they were nice items just not useful to me. so IC my character said post it on the boards talk to the hard heads (post on IC forum).

perhaps Lost is saying "be a duck let most roll off your back, and be helpful ooc).

Unless someone enters the game saying "Monies for newbs..wantz pwn bitch's an cyberz". ooc comments do not bother me. Hell had ooc converstations in party chat due to I see party chat as just an ooc thing unless a dm event.

Discussing builds, items, and spells seems like a good thing IG. Both parties had fun and being in just that part chat no one else had to see it.

I do have rules for RP they are rather simple.

1. If you find yourself in uncomfortable rp or something you dislike remove yourself from it.
2. Seek a convent time to discuss the matter with the other party via tells or pms
3. Avoid said player until resolve
4. involve staff if no common ground or they become an ass.
5. never tell others how to rp their character because we are wrong. Only be concerned about how we rp our own character.
6. Lead by example but accept that folks have to choose to follow just as much as you have chosen to lead.
7. Be helpful ooc no matter how much of an ass the character is the player should be helped as they need it.
8. Have fun, and create fun for others.
9. talk to players to make sure feelings never hurt or discuss plans to insure they are comfortable with what ever idea is thought of.

You can boil all your points down to one VERY simple rule people...

Ahem...USE COMMON SENSE B)

I wouldn't really consider myself as a proponent of common sense in an environment that works by the make-believe basis.

In fact, I would be a proponent of common sense only in environments and situations where considerable majority shares the same views of what is 'common sense.' For example in debate forums it is common sense to abide the debate rules and refrain from posting pictures of owl.

What I would encourage people to do is to not be overly sensitive. Douche bags are douche bags. But it is up to you how offended you get by the women's sanitation equipment.

And, Void, I am most certainly not trying to say that people should become ducks.
What I am trying to say in my trademarked overly negative style is that:
Just let it roll off your back like rain off a duck.

if you RPed every aspect of a build, race, class/es alignment, or a particular quirk, most people would find it very difficult to do, best thing is to pick an aspect you one and role with it, and most of all have fun :)
