Question About Chats.

I tried inviting people to use the voice chat on discord, of the twenty or so people I asked only one person agreed to use it. Further, most of them made lame excuses claiming their mic was "broken", or that they were incapable of both listening and reading simultaneously.

Given the level of distrust in the community to even use voice-over-ip I sincerely doubt they'd ever use video.


I realize my words here can seem harsh, but understand that I come from many other online communities where using voice chat is the typical norm. Within this context, it just seems very backwards and foreign that this community should have such apprehension to its adoption.

Everyone has their own levels of comfort. For some, it's video chatting. For others, it's text. Some can't or won't talk while concentrating on RP as they find it immersion breaking, and others have no interest at all in discussions beyond the necessary. This is a hobby, people enjoy themselves in different ways and are welcome to their preferences. Those preferences (and boundaries) should be respected. It certainly does not make someone a better or worse contribution to the community.

I, for one, like to keep my lines of communication open, but I won't engage on a personal/social level save for with those I share some level of rapport with. It doesn't make me unfriendly (in fact, I'm quite the opposite!) it's simply important to me to keep the lines between IC and OOC distinctly separate.

Yeah, not going to lie, I stick to only text form myself at least. Text form to me is: I can read it when I want and it won't take my attention away from whatever I might be doing otherwise. I regularly run videos on the background so voice chat and/or video chat would just distract me from that. And for me it's not about microphone or webcam :P I do have those ^{(granted I never bought them, for reasons above, people just thought I'd use them if they bought me such, well.. spoiler!)} I just haven't even attached them. Heck, I hate phones too and only keep it on silent and away from me. So people better send me a text message or feel lucky.

I often have various music playlists or friends compilations playing in background. I haven't heard a Nwn2 game sound in ages.

When solo, I'll often I'll go afk and go on a complete information tangent if I hear a song or band that I didn't really know and find interesting.

And so for me and probably those that play with me, text probably works better. (nothing like irrelevant and perhaps loud music in the background to ruin someone's IC game...)

TLDR: yeah, everyone's got their own style.

Thank you, for the imput, everyone. I understand that pretty much everyone here would rather text chat, which is completely fine and understandable. I was merely seeing if anyone would be interested. :D
