Barter screen can delete items at the current moment. But it does so only if you linger in the barter screen for ~3 minutes or longer. Meaning there's a sufficient time window to still barter, but if one or the other of the parties reaches uncertainty or RP drags along, it is suggested that you cancel the barter.

Reason is according to current theory a fix to OnUnacquired script on the server that was meant to clean up. It just was not foreseen that you technically unacquire items when you put them into barter screen.

Anyway, this is just a heads up. That's the cause for why some people have been abruptly lost items in barter screen.

This should be hotfixed, but I'd suggest not testing it with the most expensive items you can think of. Since it requires verification still.
